both of these are air locks, i prefer the tall one.

NICE! Ok, so I know what I need to get. I am going BACK to the store in a few minutes.

Well, I am learning what to do and what I need, so I won't complain. And then it's fun being laughed at by YOU James. Just kidding. I"m a good sport, even though I am verbally challenged and I need kid's children's books and pics to understand simple commands. LOL

yelp ruston....mitcham farms..i have had peaches from every state, nothing can compare...make a great wine...

I didn't even think about Ruston peaches until you mentioned it. Yep, I know all about mitcham farms. People down here "supposedly" sell Ruston peaches alongside the road but I think that's just some WalMart peaches being passed off as Ruston peaches. :ft

I like the taller one that you have James. I saw that online today when I was looking. I was hoping the wine store had it but he gave me the one that you see in the pic.

So, I'm taking it when I go back to the store, I will be purchasing a universal stopper right? This better be my last trip. LOL

if you are serious about making wine, i would buy 5 are 6, stoppers for 1 3 5 gallon carboys, you will use alot chemicals if you start making larger batches.
but if the store is close you can get on a as needed basis.
its 80 miles to my closest supply store.

Thank you.

I am from Opelousas, LA. I was in Bastrop on Friday.

Yes I would get multiple bungs and airlocks they sold you that cap cause it prob cost more.

I've been threw Opelousas a lot of times. Going back and forth to NewOrleans my sister lives there.

Yes, I am definitely serious about it. That's why I ask so many questions and trying to buy everything that I need. So, I need to start looking for the 1 and 3 gallon carboys. I didn't realize they make them in the smaller sizes. I will probably have to order the smaller ones from online.

Question.........Can the orange topper be used and insert the air lock inside of one of the holes? Just curious and want to see if he told me the wrong info. That is how he explained it to me.

The air lock was only $0.99 but that looks like it could break if it falls, so I can get a bunch of those. Not sure how much the bungs costs but I will find out when I go back to the store.

Yes it can be used like he said its just not the preferred. I've tried using them never seem to get a good seal on the carboy and forget trying to vacuum degas with one. rubber bung is the way to go.

she is not ready to even think about vacuum degassing.
lol, god can u imagine that with hose all over the place chewing gum on the ceiling, and probably rabbit pellets in the sink...
this is a die hard country girl...

Keep the orange carboy cap, you may need it later, or in case of emergency. The universal bungs (small will fit 1, 3, 5, 6, 6.5 gallon glass and every Better Bottle/Better Bottle-like I have used) typically cost $0.79-$1.00. I just keep extra bungs and airlocks around. If you want single gallon glass carboys think jugs of wine, jugs of apple juice/cider. Check recycle center, usually grab them for a quarter or such. If you have Craigslist or Freecycle you can watch for ads or even place one.

saramc is correct, recycle center, craigslist, etc..be resource full.
i buy the 6.99 1 gallon jugs and use it to top off with if its decent.mostly i just empty the wine out...cheaper then driving 80 miles, are getting online.

Thanks for the tip. I know that I won't use that method.

Can the orange carboy cap be used just to store the wine after it's done? or not?

This is what I picked up (rubber stopper) yesterday when I went back to the wine store after work. I tried to fit it in my 5 gallon carboy and IT WOULD NOT FIT. And I won't even tell you the story as to why it didn't fit. I'm sure James will figure it out. LOL LOL. I had to laugh at myself. Anyway, here are some pics.

And I realized on yesterday that I have a case of glass gallon jugs in my back room. I forgot all about that. (*hiding under my chair*)

When I was at the wine store, I was checking out all of the other supplies in the store (syphon, etc) and I will go back when I have time to look at every thing and purchase what I need.

This is so fun !!!
