I spent the whole day from 9:00 this morning till 9:45 ripping out my
old basement stair and installing my new all Oak stair today. When
removing the old 1 which was just a bunch of 2x6's nailed together and
painted(from the 50's) I discovered that I was in for some real work as
the existing header stuck out pretty far from being even with the 1st
floor landing and that needed to be even so that the new stair would
not be sticking out into my doorway for the winemaking room as the old
1 did and still meet code. I had to cut back the header and sister back
the other side with a Lam. beam and carriage bolts. I still have to
install the railing but that wont go up for awhile as those walls have
to be touched up, primed, and painted before the railing can be
installed to make life easier.

Great job Wade. Did you ever think about doing that for a living?...... You know he's a Pro folks- 45 minutes from start to finish- WOW! Began at 9:00 AM and finished at 9:45!!!! Now clean that camera lens and go work with your wine some. How about a new thread- or continue this one- Wade's Vacation- Time well spent. Each day you show us what you did that day. What's on tap for today?

Very nice....will be really pretty once you get them finished....a little steep tho, but you have to work with the space available...we found that out when Jim built ours.

Thanks everyone, NW, its a 8 1/8" rise which is just an 1/8" under code around here. Would have been nice to do a lower rise but like you said, very limited.

Well today i spent going to the dump 3 times with all the wreckage from my old stair and garbage accumulated from the week. THEN I spent 7 hours replacing front and rear brakes on both cars. I want to shoot the person who developed the drum brake!

Finally the whole room down there is all painted, electrical is all in and stairs are stained and 2 coats of lacquer on them. will put 2 more just on the treads and risers maybe tomorrow. I still have to stain and lacquer the cove molding that goes under the treads and make some to go on top of the stringers but thats easy. Heaters are in and working. Need carpet and tile and trim and drop ceiling and then its done! Boy after writing all that I see I am still very far from done!

Nice stairs Wade! You must have paid some professional a fortune to have that quality work done. I hope he gets paid weakly, I mean weekly!

I wish I could have paid someone to do it. I spent all day yesterday installing the rail system and staining it all and all day today lacquering it all. and hitting the keg both days as Im working. Man do I hate staining and lacquering but dont trust the wife to do that like I do with paint as you can just go over that. She does an allright job but cant cut for nothing and gets paint all over everything even after I tape everything off.

That is absolutely beautiful! I admire a good tradesman.Just don't let your wife read your posts!! On the other hand, maybe she is a good painter but just gets you to do it by dropping a little paint here and there????

Very nice work Wade, what are the adopted codes there? 7 3/4" is the max riser height here, but when replacing existing that is exempt to make fit where can't bring to code.

Great Job Wade..... very professional.

Having a talent like that will pay very well when you go to sell your home in future years.
