Started abatch of rootbeer tonite with myson. He really enjoys being the one doing themeasuringand mixing of the ingredients. I find it a great way to get himinvolved with the whole process.

Final product. Let it ferment for a few days to carbonate and ready for him to enjoy.

He just turned 8 and he likes to help me work the wine. So we make rootbeer just like making wine. Cleaning everything with one-step, making a yeast starter, etc... And in this case he gets to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Bob, I'm not sure where you are, but I remember digging up sassafras roots and trying the whole root beer process from scratch! And, while my son is now a senior in high school, when he was a sophomore he impressed his chemistry teacher with his knowledge of specific gravity, pH, etc -- so there is an educational component to all this too... especially when the teacher asks how he learned that and the answer is "Oh, that's how we make wine!"

We can put them in the brick buildings and try to teach them things, but when they can actually apply the knowledge, that is learning!

Kyles been checking the firmness of the bottle a couple of times everyday and we finally are going to put in the fridge tonite. Do not need to re-decorate the walls if it explodes. Mom would not be pleased.

Two things.....When I was a kid...my dad made root beer..and all in one day all of the bottles had exploded in the basement...sounded like fireworks...Went down to see and root beer was dripping off the basement rafters.

I used to dig sassafrass roots for tea. I had a wood stove and kept a pot of roots simmering constantly. I found that when my root supply was getting low....I was out there frantically digging more......I think that stuff is addictive.

I do love sassafrass!!!!!
