Why the hesitancy to add the hydrometer sample back to the carboy? If everythings properly santizied (usually with K-meta instead of iodophor, in wine), there should be no harm done.. Which would negate his argument about losing the sample.. I think he just wants an excuse to drink it, personally :)
 
Thanks for posting Wade, after seeing this why would I ever use an hydromoter again?
I took a reading of my Apple Resieling using the hydrometer, trying to read the small lines I came up with .998 with the refractometer it was actaully .996close but not exact.
Now with that said can you imagine how exact you could get with back sweeting? You could draw a small sample from the carboy, like a half of a wine glass and using an eye dropper adding small amounts of sugar untill you have the right taste, take a reading from your refractometer and you can add the appropriate amount of sugar. this is awsome
 
one cup of sugar to 5 gallon will raise the brix level by 1 degree
