:slp Hi everyone,
I'm just gathering info to start with. I don't know what the caliber of knowledge is here, I hope I don't offend anyone with my beginner questions. Thanks

Welcome to winemaking talk. You will find folks here of all stages of the hobby. We love new people wanting to learn. Feel free to ask questions and we'll guide you along. Are you going to start with fresh fruit or a concentrate kit?

Hi cljtecr,

Welcome to WineMakingTalk, and no question is a stupid question, so do not think you will offend anyone, we are all here to help you.

cljtecr,
welcome aboard!
A few things to remember:
We all started exactly like you, so ask any and all questions, anyone that gets offended by it is in the wrong community.
We all are still learning, this is a never ending process, anyone that tells you that they know it all is full of crap, run from them fast and far!..LOL

Does anyone know if there are any recipes for making small batches (fifth, 1/2 gal. , gal.).

If you find a recipe you think you'll like, just reduce all the ingredients by 4/5ths to make a gallon recipe. I tend to experiment more in my one gallon batches and not use a recipe. The people on here are great if you screw something up or get stuck.

cljtecr, lots of us experiment with gallon jugs. The wine of the month club would be a fun place for you to check out. Anyone is welcome, and each person makes a different kind of wine of their own choice. Basically we share the recipe, comment on any problems encountered and later share our opinions of the wine and indicate any changes we'd make to the recipe. Very informal, no pressure, but reading all those other recipes and how they turned out is a great way to learn a lot pretty quickly. I've only done one month but it's incredible what unusual ingredients folks are experimenting with. Most are beginners, but a couple experienced wine makers tend to keep an eye out for us and speak up if they think we might be in trouble.
