If you are able to get a copy of Wine Expert catalogue from your retailer you will see that on pages 30-31 they rank all of the various wine kits on the basis of Body, Oak Type, Oak Intensity, Sweetness, F-Pack, and Awards.

While these tend to be subjective in nature this might give you an idea of what type of red you might want to start with.

Don't shoot the messenger, just repeating what I have read many times on this as well as other forums plus my own experience making Cellar Craft kits.

Yes...I actually did get that catalogue...thanks!! It will help alot!!!

I will be picking up a second kit this weekend...once this first one is ready to move into the secondary, I can start another one!!! This one still will be a WE kit...most likely from the Original Series!! Very possibly the Vieux Chateau du Roi :)

Cheers!!!

To me they all have their specialty areas. I myself find the RIS kits to be the best in the red wine area not including the Mosti Mondiale Masters and Meglioli series as I just cant justify the price on these although Ive had a couple and they were awesome! Like many Im limited on funds and just choose to get 2 Winery Series or almost 2 EP's over 1 Meglioli kit. I have only tried 2 Cellar Craft reds and these were supposed to be their big winners I just dont think they come close to those kits mentioned above. Ive treid a bunch of W.E. reds and have only liked a few. I think W.E.'s whites are top notch along with their specialty kits like Peach Ice Wine, Chocolate Raspberry Port. I find them batter then most other specialty kits. I do always hve much more of a problem clearing them though and usually toss out their fining pack and use SuperKleer with much better results.

Well...like I said I don't know very much if anything LOL so I'm going to the "friendly" place for kits...the service is great and that is something I need :)

Gonna buy kit #2 this weekend!!! Can you say OCD???? ROFL!!!!!

Yesh!!!!

Given your user name, I'd say a Pinot noir kit is probably fitting.

ROFL!!!

I was wondering if anyone would catch that...just for the record...I had that name long before the movie was out!! it was a Men Without Hats song :)

And yes, I love a good Pinot...I would do a kit right away but they do take some time to come of age so I'm told...I will do one...maybe my 4th?!!!!

Cheers!!

My suggestion is to stay away from Wine Expert all together. Too many people have complained their kits have KT or "Kit Taste" all too often.

Go with Cellar Craft Showcase or RJ Spagnols winery series.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone who has no actual experience with a particular brand will feel free criticize it based on what others have said.

While I uphold a persons first amendment rights, perhaps it may have been more informative if you wrote from your actual experience with a product.

All righty then!!!

Well this Sangiovese is fizzing along very well right now...can almost hear it while I type LOL!! It should be ready to transfer over come the weekend!! Then for round 2 :r

Wonder if the wife can survive round 2?? She says the yeasty smell is getting to her!!! Yesh :slp

Toodles!!

hehehe, my wife cant stand the smell of anything fermenting but really hates when I brew some beer!!!! She is hating life this month because I just brewed a batch last weekend and plan on doing 2 more batches very shortly! LOL

ROFL!!!!

Way too funny!!!

Well like you said...its starting...I have 5 carboys...picking up another kit this weekend...then another at the beginning of June :D

Wino that I am!!!

Actually I can buy a kit for the same price as a bottle of Scotch!!! I think that makes her a bit happy LOL!!!

That bottle of Scotch aint going to take over an entire floor in your house though!!! LOL

"Consumption always rises to meet production" TV
So, do you go through ten to twelve bottles of scotch each year? She'll figure that one out eventually, you know.

Yup I do and yup she's a smart cookie ROFL!!!!

If only I can get her away from beer and clam to try and like wine!!!

And space I think is gonna become an issue...leads me to a question...

Once I move from my primary to the secondary, can I keep that carboy lets say downstairs where it is a bit cooler??? Would that affect anything???

If not...then yipee!!! I have the whole basement!! She never goes down there :D

The best place to keep your wine is in the basement, as it is likely concrete and less likely to be bouncing around, as could happen on a joisted floor with people running around (either kids, or you chasing your wife).

I made that one 4-5 months ago. Not bad, not one of my favorites, somewhere in the middle. I thought it would be more like the Limited Brunello which is the same grape, but definitely not the same for some reason.

I would still keep the temperature "up" a bit while it is in secondary fermentation. After you stabilize and degas it you can move it to a cooler environment.
