Job Description
The Bear Guard’s primary goal is to assist in the field operations for Arctic Science Support Logistics services, to protect the scientists and UMIAQ / BTS PS Staff. This role is to support the project to allow the research staff to conduct their respective project(s) in providing adequate bear guard safety. The Bear Guard’s will work directly under the Operations Manager.

The Bear Guard’s may need to work on weekends, this is a Temporary “On-Call” position that may required work outside of normal business hours.

Required Skills
The Bear Guard will accompany the scientists and their research group with the UMIAQ/ BTS PS and CPS staff to provide safety at the site from bears to allow the scientists to conduct their research. The Bear Guard will need to be familiar with the ice and surroundings to include the BEO Barrow Environmental Observatory and the Barrow Area to identify possible encounters with a bear. The Bear Guard must be able to respond immediately and communicate effectively to ensure safety to all persons in the field.

Additional responsibilities include:

•Understand controls to prevent Bear/human interactions.
•Maintain and update a polar Bear sighting log, to include cooperation with the local community.
•Be aware and understand state and federal regulations of Bear watch and hazing.
•Implement all forms and reports required by federal and state agencies.
•Must be well organized and demonstrate the ability to perform in a proficient manner the assigned duties.
•Implement site observation and reporting procedures, be able to identify bear tracks, and/or activity.
•Perform independently without direct supervision. Knowledge/awareness of safety issues.
•Have punctual and on time work history.
Required Experience
•Fire Arms / Weapons training, must have the ability to use appropriate weapons and ammunition to provide adequate safety.
•Be able to prevent Bears from associating with humans and food, facilities, and gear.
•Successfully completed ADF&G and or USFWS Bear encounter/hazing training for designated Bear watch and hazing.
•Develop and or provide Bear avoidance & human encounter/interaction plan.•Provide and monitor hazing prevention programs onsite.•Be able to protect workers and wildlife.
•Must possess current Alaska Driver's License.
•Must have Mammal Hazing - Polar Bear Certification Card.
Preferred Skills/Experience:

•Have a current First Aid / CPR card.
•Minimal administrative duties in maintaining documents, and skills operating computer based programs such as electronic mail, and time and attendance software.
All Employees are subject to a Non-DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing Program. Employees must pass a Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening, and must follow all Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.

Authorized Driver Requirement: Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.
