Hey, John,

Welcome to WMT. It sounds like you are well on your way to wine-dom!

Let us know what your plans are before you start your first batch.

Hi Paul,

I am planning to use RED STAR MONTRACHET YEAST for making my first Red Wine. I will need a good red wine recipe that can survive long & at least I should l be able to start using it from the 2nd or 3rd year .

Most important for me is to hunt for Good grape fruit . I am planning to take some tools like Brix and pH paper strips with me to select and buy the right grape that I need for making wine.

Experts may not need these as they will be able to tell with the taste or crushing the fruit. So as a beginner I will need to relay on these gadgets.

Found Brix and pH paper on ebay , not sure about these my need some feedback.

For extracting about 23 litres of Grape Juice , how much kilogram of Grape would be needed from a good grapes ?

I am planning of making a Oak Basket for grape fruit press for about 12'' height and about 11'' dia from 1/2 '' lumber found here...

Welcome to forum!

John, were you born and raised in India? Is wine making common in India? Can grapes be grown in the area of India that you live?

Hello Bill ,

I was born & raised in India . I have been around to couple of Countries like Dubai ( UAE ) , Brazil ,Indonesia , KSA .

There are couple of Vineyards in & around Pune , Bangalore.

Wine making at home are common in some part of India & you may also read more about the Indian wine history from wiki link below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_wine

Have seen there are Grape grown in parts of Coimbatore / Tamil Nadu .

When I was a kid , have seen in our Industry they used to manufacture and supply Vineyards accessories .These vineyards also used to send us many baskets full of grapes from their farm during the season.

We have a small farm but not grape , I was thinking to grow grape in a small area to see how it comes out & I know it needs lot of care.

Regards,
John

Thanks for sharing those links, they made for a interesting read. I was floored by the Wikipedia statement that... "The modern wine market in India is small; annual per capita consumption of wine in the country is a mere 9 milliliters, approximately 1/8000th that of France."

Liquor of almost any kind is sort of banned or taxed heavily in India, prohibition is imposed on quite a few states too.

Live here...trying to make some wine with whats available locally. Few folks here make wine the way its supposed to viz.... secondary fermentation with Airlock, the right yeast and all... We hardly get any good yeast here even for baking purposes... things are changing but very very slowly.

Beer making on the other hand is a more popular hobby in here.

Welcome to the forum!

Hope you meet with some wine making success in spite of all the obstacles in your way.
