Hydrometer readings

I got a question. even though I've made a few batches and always go to dryness. I see the ABV level on the hydrometer stops before SG.


What would the difference be if I stopped when the abv level reaches 0 instead of waiting a little longer until the SG reaches .990?


I've got a batch now that's at 0 on the ABV and it's still bubbling away making even more alcohol.

Once it reaches 0 (1.000), it can actually continue fermenting and increase the ABV.

You can use the table to figure this out or there are several calculators on the net to figure it out for you... Here is one I got from masta.

Another way to figure it out ABV is to take the difference of your OG and FG and multiply it by 130 or 133, I will have to try to find where I read that,and it will give you the ABV...Edited by: Steve

Well, this is what I do:


(SG Start x 1000) - (SG end x 1000)
-----------------------------------
7.36





Don't ask me how it works, but it does.


for example


SG start = 1.090
SG end = 0.990


= 13.586% abv





Another:


SG start = 1.090
SG end = 1.000


= 12.2% abv





and so on and so forth. I'm no mathemetician (terrible at it, actually), but it is simple enough.

Ok I see the PA scale is really only a rough messurement compared to SG.
