I'm a huge fan of Balvenie Double Wood scotch. One day I saw Balvenie Caribbean Cask which is Scotch aged in Rum barrels. I should have known though. One of my reasons for really preferring scotch over bourbon is the fact that scotch isn't sweet while bourbon is. (I've mostly lost my sweet tooth) The rum barrel made the scotch sweet. That really turned me off. I ended up giving the rest of the bottle away.
Bourbon isn't as sweet as rum (I do like both rum and bourbon, just don't mix it with my scotch!) I would love to know how this selection turns out.
Well, Mrs. B wanted steak tonight. I picked up her 'go to' (filet) along with a nicely marbled, 1.5 inch thick NY Strip for me. Gonna put a coffee/pepper/brown sugar based rub on mine and grill up over some cherry wood. So I cracked this bad boy open (and grabbed two more while I was at the store). For $12, it's pretty nice, but forgettable. I imagine I could get it for $10 if Total Wine has it. You wouldn't know it was in bourbon barrels, though it is a little more oaky than your typical Cab in this range. There is a hint of residual sugar - similar, but much less than an Apothic Red. 14.5% ABV. Lots of dark fruit - I get black cherry quite a bit.
