It is a brand new carboy.
I would have had it a week tomorrow.
I've already emailed the retailer.

Actual filtering equipment is out of the question right now.
By "filtering" I rather mean coffee filters on top of cheesecloth as filters.
I did check and match up the break and it seems that all glass is accounted for, but the thought of someone drinking my wine and ingesting a piece of glass... shuddering

Just send it all to me. My iron stomach can take it. :D

If you filtered it through a coffee filter, I can not imagine a spec getting through. It would be labor intensive, but it's only 3 gallons. I just don't think it has any in there. It didn't separate until you moved it.

Sourgrapes,

No idea where the glass was manufactured. Neither the website, nor the box tells me anything on origin.

Id filter it myself. No glass is getting through a filter

I think you would probably be OK with a coffee filter, but I wouldn't drink it and I wouldn't serve anything I wouldn't drink.:ft

I try to use a real wine filter. Your going to be going through a ton of coffee filters they clog up very fast

I wouldn't drink it and I wouldn't serve anything I wouldn't drink.

I think that really just says it all.
I haven't tossed it yet because the thought of all that wine going down the drain stings a bit.
But I know that I wouldn't ever feel comfortable drinking it and no way would I give a bottle to someone else.

*sigh*
Well, that just split my kit in half and now the approximate 15 bottles I end up with are going to have to be twice as good!

Correct move

ALWAYS side on the safety side, think of the liability !

REMEMBER,IT'S ONLY JUICE

I can't really argue the safety side. Joe is right and peace of mind is invaluable.

But..given the fact it was only really fractured at time of transfer and not broke, I probably would have racked it and set it aside. If for nothing else, to see what the end product was going to turn out like. Then reproduce with a fresh batch for consumption if I was happy with the end product.
I have a huge flower vase that I bought when we were living in Colombia in the 90's that holds at least 4 gallons of water. It has had a similar crack around it with just 4 inches left to do it in for years. To this day, it won't break or give up any liquid. Yet, I keep waiting and holding my breath every time I use it.

Absolutely screaming in frustration

Today is the day to add meta, sorbate, and the f-pack to my kit.

I wanted to try out my brand new auto siphon and decided to use it on the doomed batch. It's not time to rack the other 3 gallons as all I need to do is add the additives and stir. The "good" batch was handled as instructed and everything looks so far, so good.

I was siphoning out of 2nd of 2 glass carboys I have left into a bucket, and heard a friggin crack! I was stirring up the lees because I wanted very little clean up.
I'm using a 24 inch plastic spoon and I swear, I wasn't banging it in there, just stirring it up so I wouldn't have to dink around too much with the glass carboy during cleaning (bc I'm a bit paranoid about glass now).
I hear a snap. Are you bleepin' kidding me??

Today I dealt with a DOA infant, another guy attempting to give CPR to his coworker (who was clearly dead), my cat puking on my shoe as soon as I arrived home, and now my 2nd broken glass carboy in a week.
While I realize the latter two are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, today absolutely stinks.

Carboys

I was told I don't know how true it is but their coming in from CHINA and there bad,,,,that's what I was told the Mexicans don't make them anymore only the Italians and now the CHINESE IMAGINE THAT!

I am livid.

I realize some of it is just due to a craptastic day, but still.

Not one, but TWO carboys??

If they both broke that's more than coincidence. Instead of getting a replacement from your retailer, perhaps you should pursue getting a refund and spend it somewhere else on Italian made carboys.

PS - There was a thread on here recently about BAD carboys. Everyone that had issues had Chinese made carboys, FWIW.

If it were mine"? out of all respect Joe I would fiiter it. More then likely if there was one shard it was left when she racked it off the Less. Just me maybe. I have the utmost respect for you but Id filter it.
No coffee filters!! Wont work!! it will take you a month! Just filtering my lemoncelllo take a lot of time with the coffee filters. they gum up pretty quick. Im talking maybe 8 bottles.
Your doing a whole cayboy of wine. Where do you live. I will come take it off your hands and take care of it!! lol

Dang Jeri! If I were you I would have just crawled into a bottle and stayed there till tomorrow. I am really feeling bad for you.
Hope tomorrow is better. Both at work and home.

Really sorry, my friend. Keep that chin up. It's your only damn option!
