Hello all,

So my budding Garage Winemaking hobby is into it's 5th year and I just returned from my annual mecca to Prosser Washington where we picked up a ton of Shiraz and Merlot for the 2010 system.

While I was down there I managed to pick up a 2007 French Oak barrel that I was told might have Brettanomyces. I have read quite a bit on this over the past couple of days and want to know if anyone on this forum has experience with used Oak barrels with Brett. Particularly, I am looking for a testing kit and suggestions on cleaning the barrel for use with some 2009 cabernet I have sitting around.

Looking forward to any assistance and also to contributing to the forum.

From what I have read and heard once you have a barrel contaminated with brett you cant get rid if it(too many pours, and cracks for it to hid in and stay healthy). Most people say turn it into a decorative planter.

You can try and goggle recoop wine barrels and try to talk to folks that recoop them to see what they say.

Fully agree with Racer above! Maybe tearing apart and refiring it the barrel could do it, maybe??? Ive heard not to even think about using a barrel though.
