I've often found that leaving 5 or more buds helped somewhat then prune after last threat of frost has passed.

That is my plan. I'll prune first pass in March and last prune after the terminal buds break.

Check the NC Grape Foundation site. Johnston County is Muscadine country. I'm in SE Wake County, also Muscadine country. NE of Wake is French-American country, and you need to move farther west for Vinifera.

EDIT: ROFL!!!! You're in Montana, not North Carolina, so my comments are completely wrong!!!

My wife works in Clayton, NC, so I made an assumption that is totally unwarranted.

Thanks for the followup winemaker81. We were in Montana but not anymore. Hunting for new permanent digs in NC and there is home in Clayton of interest
