I just registered today so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm NoSnob (well, maybe sometimes) from Florida. I have really loved wines for years, but have been a frugal buyer of a very few brands of preferred wines. Recently, I decided to learn more about wines and learning winemaking was part of that effort. Also, I have begun buying much better wines and experimenting a bit. So far it has been worthwhile. I found I couldn't really learn more about wines without trying a much more extensive (and expensive) selection. And it has given me a chance to cellar a very small collection of value wines (WS 90+ for <$20). Meanwhile, the other more everyday wines I buy helps me with my bottle collection. I can see how one can never have enough bottles so I have my friends saving them.
Last fall I began making kit wines. My first was a WinExpert Selection Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend. My first taste of it at bottling was almost identical to the Beaujoulais Noveau I had just sampled the day before. I call mine a Bordeaux Noveau! However, it has improved steadily as I sample it and in another 3-6 months it should be excellent. Hope springs eternal. My second kit was a WE Selection Estates Italian Barolo, now in final stage of clarification. It's a long-term keeper. Italy doesn't even let it out of the country until it's 3 yrs old. I have my third kit, a WE SE Washington Columbia Valley Riesling but have not yet pitched the yeast for it. It will be very drinkable long before the Barolo I figure. And my wife will love it because she loves an off-dry Riesling.
I look forward to learning from all of you.
