You make a good point JS. I am sure that you are correct to a certain degree, but I have to say that not all competitions are like that.

I remember the time when I lost out to a batch of dandelion wine. This, I think, is a time where newness won out.
 
I was a bit surprised in our recent wine competition by one of my wines, it was a grapefruit. Made it on a dare (or maybe a challenge) from my wife, she saw me eating a grapefruit one morning and said, now there is something you never fermented before. So that afternoon, where was I, Costco buying three bags of grapefruit. It turned out very well, lightly backsweetened and has a nice, almost Sauvignon Blanc taste to it, but you can certainly tell it is grapefruit. I got a silver, just missed a gold by a bit.
