I stumbled upon this interesting article this morning. The author started out as a home winemaker, eventually bought a winery on Vancouver Island with his wife and seems to be making a living at least. For me, it's somewhat of a shame he didn't cover some of the varietals found commonly around Missouri, but there are some tidbits and information to be gained no matter what. Most important thing he says (and more elegantly than this) Hybrids aren't Vinifera, you can't treat them the same. It was freely available when I posted this, hopefully it will remain that way.
