RJ Spagnols Cru Select Brunello Update:
I started this kit in Jan. I followed the instructions pretty much to the letter with the exception of adding sorbate.
It had been aging in a carboy for approx 4 months, at this point, I put it into my 23 liter Vadai barrel.
I decided to check to see if I needed to top it off at all, and to taste it......Holy Lord! This Brunello is so close to the commercial Brunello that I have drank, it is unbelievable!
Brunello is one of my favorite varieties of wine, I purchase a lot of Brunello, to be honest, I have just about a dozen bottles in my "wine cellar", and ironic enough, my wife and I were just at friends house on Friday evening, they make pizza, and I usually bring a different bottle of wine to sample with my buddy, I am trying to open his eyes to different varieties, and this Friday, I brought a $65.00 bottle, not crazy expensive, but a decent bottle, it had won a medal in 2012.
The Brunello in the barrel has taken on so many great characteristics, I tasted the plum notes and the tannic astringency at the end.
I am pleasantly surprised that it is developing into such a good wine.
So for anyone considering this Kit, I highly recommend it. I know the barrel has a lot to do with it, but if you can make great wine by adding a barrel to the process, I certainly would!
