Their coming back nothing to stop them except economic sanctions and that's not for certain.

We have everything necessary to stop them except willpower. We are the most powerful country in the history of Earth, militarily, technologically and morally. With privilege comes responsibility.

What!?!! What exactly would you do (if you had the "willpower")?

I hope you don't mean direct military engagement. You do realize they have a million-man standing army and 8500 nuclear warheads, right? Hmmm, 8500 nukes -- for comparison, there are only 289 cities in the US with a population over 100,000. Do you live in one of them?

I am appalled at their recent actions, and am in favor of taking action to thwart their expansionist ambitions, even if it means great sacrifices at home. But please be realistic about what one superpower can do to alter the ambitions of another superpower, when the fate of the world is in jeopardy.

Sour Grapes
In a word, no. I wouldn't she'd one ounce of American blood. There is a plethora of things we can do and should have done by now. I'll leave it there so we can talk about wine.

The expansionist, imperialist 'greater Russia' fantasy is really worrying. But I absolutely disagree that the USA has the moral responsibility to somehow put a stop to it just by virtue of being big and powerful. The USA might be the strongest country in the earth but this is an issue that is primarily Europe's to solve, multilaterally. I just hope that if push comes to shove they don't get too bogged down in committee politics to actually do something about it (as per Yugoslavia).

Dated one, was a great mix of fun and bat **** crazy. I wouldn't want to do it again if nukes were involved.

Please remember guys that there is a specifice rule against political discussions on the forum. The rule exists so polarization doesn't develop. I think we all agree it is concerning with the developments, but a wine forum isn't the place to solve world problems.

Grapeman,

I do hope that this does not get too political. If you feel it is, please close this thread.

My dad's family, every one of them, have one thing in common. They were refugees at the hands of the Russians. I was lucky enough (and blessed) to be born in this country, but I was raised to fear Russia from those that know first had.

Over the last 20 years or so, I was so glad that we were allies with Russia. We enjoyed life after the end of the cold war. Do you folks remember what cold war America was like? It truly scares me that we may return to those days.

So much more can be accomplished between allies then can be accomplished between enemies that are negotiating.

Let's all hope that this is just politics on Russia's part and not something much more serious.

Yep, all politics aside, nobody wants a return to the itchy trigger fingers of the Cold War.

Anyway, back to wine: has anyone ever tried Saperavi? It's an ancient red variety native to Georgia (arguably the ancestral home of winemaking) where it is still fermented in huge, buried earthenware jars... I've tried Aussie versions of it, very nice :dg ... it was also apparently Stalin's favourite tipple :sh

Well, If it is good enough for a psychopathic, genocidal murder, then it is good enough for me.. :) :) :) :) :)
