I am down South, but my winemaking area (basement) is real cool (58-60 degrees). I kept primary fermenting pail under a couple of lamps for additional heat (up to 65 degrees). But now I am in secondary fermentation and am using a glass carboy. I would like to keep using the good ole incadescent light bulbs to provide the slight increase in temp that I need - but do notknow the effects of light on the fermenting must! Should I wrap the carboy in a blanket for warmth and light blocking??

I would ferment upstairs till end of secondary then age downstairs. Cool temps affect some yeast

You didn't say what you were making but if it's a red, it could probably be warmed it up a bit. Whites are usually okay in the mid to upper 60's.
As for the light, I don't believe it will hurt it for that period of time. Good Luck!

I had too cool conditions so I tried a heating pad on low under the pail for several hours and it got things moving again. Just set a timer so you don't forget about it. Good luck.

I'd suggest geting a Brew Belt to keep things warmed up.
