Is there some sort of spray coating that could be used on home made ink jet printed labels to kind of water proof them? I'm think about whites that get chilled and then when taken out of the fridge have condensation form on the bottle. I'm assuming moisture will mess up ink jet labels not otherwise coated.

Thanks...

Spray polyurethane?

Or maybe some Aqua Net. It's not just for hair bands anymore. :)

Okay, I'm hoping you spray then let dry then glue on the label. I hate to think of having to remove/clean the stuff mentioned from the bottles themselves.

Bkisel, I don't know what ink jet printer you are using but I have a HP Office Jet Pro 8500 and I make all my labels with it. I can soak a bottle in water and the ink does not run. I use the HP supplied ink and Avery labels, 8160 & 8164. There is not need to spray them with anything.

I make all my labels in Word with regular printer paper and affix them with milk (easy-off). Hairspray or the hobby spray work well, but I rarely use either. I position the label and then press it into place with a terrycloth towel. As long as I am not rubbing across the ink, it will not smear. Once dry, all is well.

I print my labels on a color laser copier/printer at work. I have problems with all labels and lots of color - avery or post-it. Not from water running necessarily but when the labels get rubbed, the color comes off and it looks splotchy with white showing through. Noticeable when you have dark colored backgrounds. I may want to fix it with some kind of spray as well.

I do similar to Jim. Go out to the interweb, grab a pic/scene, take it to picmonkey and do my thing to it, save it and open it in Word. Print, cut, spray back with glue adhesive from Wal-Mart and press them on by hand. Never had any issues yet. And they come off pretty easy to be re-labeled for the next batch.

Rocky, I use an HP Deskjet printer and print to plain ink jet paper. I just tried sprinkling water on one of the bottles I have labeled and then wiped it with a paper towel - definitely smeared the ink and some came off onto the paper towel. Looks like the Office Jet and/or Avery label stock/paper makes a difference.

My wife said she believes you can get some sort of fixer spray from an art store.

Bkisel, I am thinking it has to be the ink formulation. Maybe HP has a water proof ink for your desk jet. It would be a lot easier than spraying.

I bought the Office Jet printer only because of the ink it takes. Staples & office Max talked me out of buying a laser jet for this computer because of the price ink vs laser ink. I believe it has more pigment in the ink. It does stand up to moisture and the labels do not fall off in an ice bucket. I am using Avery and Staples generic labels.
