When you use a real cork I thought you had to keep the bottle on its side to help keep the cork moist. However whenever you go to the store all the bottles are standing up, why is this?

Thanks,

For presentation to the consumer, plus the fact the vast majority of wines in your local store are not the quality you would purchase to bring home and age,you bring home and drink.Nor do they typically sit on the shelf long enough for the corks to dry out.

If you look in the back of a wine shop youll usually see the better(higher priced) wines laying on their side in a rack.

When I buy a case of wine from our local winery, they are always package upside down to keep the corks wet.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />Edited by: CajunTim

Traditionally, bottles have been stored on their side to keep the corks from drying out and leaking. I'm curious with the manufacturered corks, and particularly, George's agglomerate corks, whether storage on the side remains necessary. Very few every day drinking wines you find on your grocery store shelf still use real corks. In fact, many I see have screw caps or use synthetic plastic resin corks, which would not require such storage. By the way, RJ Spagnols has a good description of the various cork options:

I believe that George's "Perfect Agglomerate" FVW corks, are actually very similar to the Altec corks. Those are the corks that I use all the time now. RJS calls them their "Premium" corks now, and actually claim they are better than solid corks. Personally, I love the Altecs as they go both in and out quite smooth, and I've not had a TCA tainted bottle with them yet.
