Great article..

The decline of the wine industry and prohibition did have one positive influence though. Once prohibition was repealed, more modern and scientific winemaking techniques were researched adopted. This lead to some huge breakthroughs in winemaking science.

For example, and from what I understand, the discovery of MLB and its affect on wine was due, in part, to the fact that the US wine industry was re-starting and serious study into the science of wine was being made as a result.

I still see prohibition as evil. We were supposed to believe in freedom, but the prohibitionists were not happy to simply abstain from alcohol themselves. Through political trickery, they took a basic freedom away from others that did not agree with them for a period of 19 years.

Still, one needs to wonder what the US wine industry would be like today if it had not been decimated and rebuilt in more modern times.

The san gabriel's Lost winmaking history

Hi John and others,

I thought I knew quite a bit about the Los Angeles (city of the angels) area and San Gabriel until I my wife came across this article.

Below is a link of the Los Angeles river that starts
at Angeles crest highway and ends in long beach. I used to cycle on the bike path years ago . Little did I know that is was full of vineyards at one time. The bridge looks like the third street bridge that goes into los Angeles and has been used in many movies as has the river like terminator.

Lucky Baldwin who owned a great part of Pasadena, San Marino and the Arboretum.
He had many vinyards and if you look closely, you can see the house that was used in the TV show fantasy island and also the area was used in the original tazan movies. He was alos friends with the family of George S. Patton.

Mount Wilson now known for the observatory was originally an area that was searched for oak to make wine barrels.

Lastly The San Gabriel mission grew a lot of grapes for sacramental wine and I have been there many times.

Wish I could have just posted pictures but I am not real good at that and do not want to violate any copyright laws.

Just a few additional facts about the city I grew up in. I think a few side facts gives a kinda holistic view of things.
