Can someone please explain what a bottle filler or auto siphon does?
I am so tired of filling my tube up with water to get it to siphon and all that water goes into the carboy every time I rack. I want the cheapest solution possible.

You don't have to fill the tube with water to start the siphon.....You can suck on the tube to start the siphon...or get a cap that fits the carboy with a racking cane and you blow into one of the holes in the cap..it starts the siphon every time.
This is what the cap looks like...we love it...you can get it through George..Fine Vine Wines..

You put the racking cane through the middle hole and attach you hose to it...
Hope this was helpful

The Auto Siphon allows you to start a siphon with a few quick strokes and it basically is a racking cane inside a larger tube, it also comes with a sediment tip on the bottom and intwo sizes 3/8" and 1/2".

When you say bottle filler I assume you are talking about the auto bottle filler. The Buon Vino Automatic Auto Bottle Gravity Filler allows you to fill bottles quickly and the filler shuts off when bottle is full.

Is that what that funky cap is for...In college, we used it for something else.

I personally use an auto siphon and it works great. I used to use the water in the hose thing, but didn't like the mess.

I have this bottle filler:

i bought one of those thing fron george last week. now i know what its for lol

Definitely suck to start the siphon. How else will you perform the mandatory taste test?

peterCooper,
I do it your way. Never had any kind of contamination problem only some lipstick on the end of the tube sometimes. It used to take me a couple of tries but I'm good at it now!!!

When we started we used a turkey baster in the end of the hose. (It was a new baster and never used it for anything but wine.) It also does well for taking a sample for testing. Being shorter than a wine thief it's easier to handle and not drip everywhere when taking samples. But the auto siphon is much easier for starting the siphon for racking, etc.

I think I'll have to suck it too! The cute little orange cap does not fit 1 gallons.

Justa note on the gallons. i bought an extra racking cane and cut it down just for gallons. It really makes siphoning off much easier.

It's sounds obscene, but I suck the racking tube as well. Empty. I just sanitize it very well beforehand. What might help you is a racking-tube clippy-stopper thingy. http://www.finevinewines.com/ProdDetA.asp?PartNumber=4860(easier to give you the link than to explain what it is). You can suck up the wine until it gets to the clippy-stopper thing, and then you can regulate how fast the flow is, or stop it completely (when changing bottles, etc).

I love it for its simplicity.
