Hi all, I am a noob to wine making (this is my first kit) and found your forum to be quite good for advice. I am ready to stabilize and clear a WE South African Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon. The isinglass is cloudy and has flakes which i read means it is no good. Also, the WE kits call for stirring the sediment/degas/stablize.

Thanks for any and all advice, joe (aka whippetdog, since i have two whippets)

By the way, my family is convinced i will eventually blow the house up....its because my Dad tried making a fruit wine once, which apparently blew its airlock and sprayed juice all over a white sofa.

Welcome to the forum!! I would say it depends on how long you want to let it age before you bottle. If you have the time it will probably clear all on it's own. If it doesn't after awhile then by all means I would use the Super Kleer. I would rack it off the sediment and then let it set for awhile.

Youd be voiding the warranty by switching, that said I always throw away the Isinglass and usually dont use a fining agent unless it doesnt clear after about 4 months and then I hit it with the SuperKleer! SuperKleer is my go to agent!

Thanks Wade and Bob. I think I will stabilize, rack and let it sit. I can wait and see if it clears. I just didnt know about the timing of fining since the instructions have you add the isinglass when stabilizing. I've had a lot of fun learning about wine making and I appreciate your advice.

You can fine your wine at any time. I prefer to let it clear on its own if it will and 99% of the time it will. Ive only had 2 wines in my time that wnt clear on their own. 1 was a Peach wine that even after using a fining agent didnt get crystal but against all Ive ever read I hit it with a filter and that shined it right up. The other was a W.E. Peach Ice wine that took 2 times with the Isinglass and nothing and then even the SuperKleer struggled. Ive had a few batches that the Isinglass didnt work on and the SuperKleer worked immediately on and thats when I switched to the SuperKleer. That was pretty much when I was a lot less patient though.
