Aldi - Strawberries

Has Strawberries on sale starting tomorrow for .99 / lb. Looks like I'll be picking up about 50-60 lbs before the weekend. Time to make room in the freezer. Yeah Baby........I'll be cranking up the steamer sometime soon.

Is 8-10 lbs to much per gallon with strawberries or should I cut that back some? I may just shoot for 100 lbs over the next 2 weeks.

I read somewhere that unless you get your strawberries from a farmer's market, your best bet is to go frozen. The whole reasoning was that frozen strawberries are picked when they were more ripened, because rot isn't an issue with frozen fruit. Can anyone verify this to be true?

Can't confirm or deny that. I do know I used Aldi berries last year and they were excellent. Picking mine up after work tomorrow hopefully. Friday, I'll clean and cut.

FYI...

Aldi's does have a limit on what you can get. The good news is - take the Aldi's add to wal-mart and they will price match the strawberries - and there is no limit there..

I stopped today, they only had about 45 lbs. I spoke to the manager and told him I wanted 12 cases (96 lbs). He is pulling aside for me to pick up tomorrow afternoon when the truck comes in.

Good catch on the Walmart price match...

Picked up 100 lbs. It took me 45 minutes to destem, slice and bag 28 lbs. I know what I'm doing for the rest of the afternoon.

Hint:
All I do is use a strawberry destemer (neat tool).

Take Strawberry and put it in a EGG slicer to slice them. = FAST !

I too stopped by Aldi's today but I just bough 10 pounds but after destemming and removing the tips of some I ended up with 12 pounds. Better more than less. I also bought 4 seeded watermelons there. Prob. tomorrow or Sunday I'll cut them up and freeze it.

Then I'll add in some peaches and raisins and make a blend.

Steve, that's so impressive! How are you with loaves and fishes??? :i

Found another cheap easy way to destem strawberries.

Take a straw - stick it on the bottom of the strawberry at the point, push it all the way through the strawberry. The core comes right out.
