Hi I am Dan I am 40 miles west of chicago and I just got into making wine, I made a batch of pinot noir and now its sitting in bottles in the garage. I also started a shariah from chilean musk. Yesterday I ordered 14 Marquette vines since they will gow in my area and winter wont kill them. I am looking for information on trellis's since the vines will be here wensday and I guess I will be needing a grape crusher also.

Welcome to the forum. You won't need that grape crusher for a couple years, but a trellis system is something on which you should concentrate. You may have to put those plants in the ground before you get the trellis up. Just make sure your spacing is right when planing them.

Try to have as much understanding and as much done as possible before your plants arrive. We have some highly experienced viticulturists who hopefully can point you in the right direction.

Thanks, I am planning on 2 rows of 7 with each vine 6ft apart, and 6-9 feet between rows. The sod cutter will be here saturday so the ground will be ready, I can get the tiller if I need one.I am not sure what type of trellis and that is where my focus is. I would like to put one up and not have to change it down the road.

Dan, welcome to WMT. As Robie said it'll be 3-4 years before you need a crusher/destemmer and press for your vines. On the other hand you have this time to start watching Craigs list to get a deal of the life time. Of course if you start buying grapes or fruit before yours are ready you'll need some equipment.

I am doing chilean must and kits now and I want to make custom labels and have it all me mine and not some kits. I will do kits from time to time but knowing everything is from in house is a great feeling

welcome to the Form Dan. Take a look at a GDC trellis system. Grapeman on here has a modified GDC he uses with excellent results on marquettes.
Also if space allows try to space the vines 8' apart and 10' row spacing if you can.

thanks I am actually doing 9 feet between rows and 6 in between plants. is 10 better for some reason? I have close to 50 feet for 7 plants. I am trying to take a pic of the area and post it but its been raining.

marquees can be quite vigors. If a GDC trellis is used the extra room between the rows will give more room to work, the bigger reason is to keep one row from shading the other as much as possible. 9' isn't bad but I would hate for you to wish you had went a touch farther three years from now.

8' vine spacing will give you two 4' cordons, this is beter than two 3' cordons with 6' again if a GDC or a Kniffen trellis is used this number can double and the marquette is more than vigors enough to handle it.
Don't get me wrong, what you have planned out will work, I'm only giving tips based on what I would do.
