Vineyards/Wine Makers in Western North Carolina are relieved to know that hurricane Irene's track will pass far East of the their area. Harvesting of grapes has already begun. The next 2-3 weeks will likely be the peak harvest. Had Irene dumped heavy rains, the crop post certainly would have suffered.
As a novice wine maker, I'm excited to say I have lined up 100 lbs of red grapes (not certain of variety Merlot/Cap S/Cab Franc). I've made kits and fruit wine (blueberry and strawberry), but not grape wine yet. I'll surely have questions as I proceed. The supplier has asked me to remain anonymous as he prefers not to expand with this line of business. I'll be getting crushed destemmed grapes. In addition to paying a comperable juice price, I'm also offering to volunteer with crushing/destemming or any other help required.
Back to Irene, my prayers are for all who are in her path. Be safe friends.
