My hydrometer has a calibrated temperature of 60*F/60*F. Does this mean that the hydometer and the must/wine both have to be 60*F for the scale to be read directly? Also, it shows that at 60*F, I should add 0.26, I would think that at 60*F the correction factor would be 0.0. Also, if I were making wine in July and the shop temperature was 85*F, it instructs me to add .62 (not .062) to my reading. Any help in understanding this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Your first two sentences are correct. After that, refer to the chart Wade provided for corrections.

Good Luck!

Temperature in degrees F. Specific Gravity Correction

50 Degrees Subtract .005
60 Degrees No Correction
70 Degrees Add .001
77 Degrees Add .002
84 Degrees Add .003
95 Degrees Add .005
105 Degrees Add .007

My cellar temps are always between 58F and 78F. My hydrometer is calibrated at 60F. I only use it for the initial reading. I never correct it, the variance is, IMHO of no consequence.

TEMP CORRECTION
56 -0.38 58 - 0.32 60 -0.26 62 -0.20 64 -0.14
66 -0.08 68 0.00 70 +0.07 72 +0.14 74 +0.22
76 +0.30 78 +0.38 80 +0.46 82 +0.54 84 +0.62
86 +0.71 88 +0.80

This is where I got the Chart.

I agree with Lurker, nothing else is measured that close, and if you get five people to read the hydrometer, you will probably get two or three different readings.

Wrong Scale

You are reading that chart incorrectly - that is a correction factor for BRIX not S.G................gotta have your units right!

I do have to confess I do not adjust for the temp. corrections. "GUILTY!" As long as I am consistant it is irrelevant. My home is usually 68-71 degrees so I am not that concerned.

The hydrometers that I am currently using are calibrated at 68F. Since my wine tends to be about 74F all the time, I don't worry about correction factors.

Since his chart shows 0.00 correction (for Brix) at 68F, I would suspect his hydrometer is calibrated at 68F, not 60F.

Good point (I didn't actually read Bud's poorly aligned chart) but that chart is from a book, not from his hydrometer.
