Onmy first MM Barolo kit - The bentonite was to sit in the mixing cup with warm water while I poured the juice to the primary. In my attempt to mix it I thought this is a goopy mess. After some 20-30 minutes I had most of the bentonite in a solution, but some of it stuck to the spoon and the mixing cup sides.

I also pre made the yeast in the 105 degree 200ml water and let it sit and rise before addition as instructed on the yeast packet.

Are these both typical outcomes of the bentonite -- it's very different from the selections kit with more of a powder and water solution actuallly mixed directly in the primary to start.

I checked the primary today (started 20 hours ago) and it's got a rising head and some bubbles --

Thoughts?

I had that same thing but once in the bucket and all stirred up it gets mixed in good.

That is the typical procedure for those kits. It is different than the WE kits, but then I enjoy most of the mosti kits more than most of the WE kits- so who knows what is best.

Matteo (from MM) talked about the bentonite in their kits at Winestock yesterday - as I understand it, they use a special high quality bentonite. They showed some of their bentonite compared to the regular bentonite George sells in the store - the MM bentonite was sort of "Lipton-soup" colored while the regular bentonite was a darker gray, clay color. He recommended mixing it together in a blender and emphasized that any bentonite that is in clumps won't do its work in the fermenter. Maybe others remember more of what he was saying about this.

After dealing with their Bentonite, I thought the mixture was very dense, and that maybe they supplied more bentonite than solution can absorb so that they get a full solution for the must.

Has anyone ever tried a blender -- I thought this was pretty messy stuff sticking to the measuring cup and the stainless spoon i was stiring with -- spent maybe 1/2 hour to get as much solution as possible.

other thoughts? Thanks!

I had that happen too and thought it was my fault, I thought I'd not put enough water in it or didn't stir up the bentonite soon enough. Now I just try to stir it every couple of minutes while I wait the time amount the directions call for, to pour it into the must. That time it turned into basicly a lump of clay, I ended up adding a bit more warm water and mashing and stirring until it was back into a slurry state. That was not fun.

Waldo - that appears interesting but can't tell what it is - a magnetic stirrer?

An immersion blender works well. Matteo did indicate that Mosti uses a very highly refined grade of bentonite in their kits, and that it does need rehydrating. Proceedure is to put into at least 1/4 cup of warm water and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Stir before adding, or hit it with an immersion blender.

The bentonite needs to be completely mixed. They said use a blender if needed. You can also wait for an hour or so.

I agree with PeterZ an immersion blender is the way to go it will mix the bentonite toperfection.AL

As Peter said "at least 1/4 cup of warm water [more can be used] and at least 15 min. of time in the water [more time is alright]" and than use a blender if needed....

The blender part wasn't at all clear from the ad - and you know how Waldo is.......
