I am currently running a Mac mini as a home theater PC/media storage unit and need to start looking at additional space and backup. The mini currently holds photos, movies, music, etc and that feeds my AppleTV and some wireless devices.

Anyway, I've been looking at the Synology NAS - specifically, the DS213J and would run 2, 2TB disks on it, with one mirroring the other for backup. The synology units have great reviews, but I'm wondering if I'm overdoing it. The whole setup would end up costing me close to $400 and I'm just wondering if there isn't a simpler, less expensive way to go. I do need both the additional storage and am in dire need of way to back it up. This unit would provide both, as well as some other bells and whistles.

Any thoughts on these devices/setups? The unit can be found here:

Thanks!

Jim,
If losing data is a concern, a mirrored drive is the least expensive solution while using a RAID array, if it were data that absolutely could not be replaced, I would suggest a server with a RAID 5, even if you lose one HDD, you slap another in its place and the RAID builds itself.

I have the Synology as my NAS and I have all of my DVD's and CD's ripped and copied to that. It also holds all of my Photos and other stuff that I deem important. I think it's a great little device, I can access it any where in the house. I also have a small/cheap computer by both TV's and I stream my movies from it as well as my music. Basically it's my own Cloud. You can set it up to access from the internet if you desire. I have not done that as I don't have a need for it. Also since my job is a server admin and has been for 20 some years I am a little more paranoid, and also have a USB drive attached for a third option and have backup done automatically to that once a week.

Thanks all!

Fog: you setup sounds similar to what I had in mind. I like the USB drive as a backup.

Tom: would love to go RAID 5, but don't have that much data, or money to back it up. :D

And yet you use the worst sounding speakers ever sold to the public, Bose.

No highs, no lows...must be Bose.
