Over the last year I have bought a few commercial bottles of Nero d'Avola.
It has become one of my favorite wines.

I noticed that this variety is no longer available in kit form. Both RJ & WE having discontinued their kits.

what would be the closest variety to the Nero d'Avola?

I should note that when browsing wine kits (RJ & WE since they are more readily available to me), I have issues with the naming of them.

Sure Pinot Noir is a Pinot and a merlot is a merlot.

But where is the Chianti.
I guess it is the difference between names and variety!

It's too bad WE discontinued the Nero D'avola kit because mine is 1 year old and going back into the barrel for 3-4 months. First run was 16 days. Thought I wayyyy over oaked it, now the oak has faded and left me a classic bright berry taste. A little thinner than the other skin kits, but the barrel will help. On another note, they can't call a wine "Chianti" unless it is made in a certain area. Just like "Champagne". I know Tempranillo is "Rioja" and I think Sangiovese is "Chianti". Wiki says nero is similar to "new world Shiraz" not sure if I would agree but it is on the internet, so it must be true. Hope this helps.

If memory serves me, Mosti has a Rosso D'Avola which I think may be what you are after. Check with George at Fine Vine Wines.

There was also a RJS Restricted Quantity (RQ) Nero D'Avola for 2014. If you search a few suppliers, you may find some.

Yes, my RQ Nero D'Avola is coming along really nicely. If you can find one, I'd grab it!

The 2 or 3 places I had looked online were sold out!

Thanks for info
