I have all my wines aging (tuscan, barolo, Brunello [2], pinot noir & white wino {white in name only})

I typically drink big reds, loaded with oak. I am trying to venture away from that at least once!

My LHBS has 2 kits available Cab Sav or merlot. It is either Rj Spags or We & both are higher end.

Commercially I really have both rarely.
I have had a white rock cab from Napa,
And generic merlot.
I don't drink them often enough to have an opinion or knowledge of them.

Any opinions or recommendations as to which should be next in my carboy?
Or do I stick with big bold Italians?

I think most people would still classify Cab Sauv and Merlot as a "big red." If you are venturing, you are not venturing too far!

On those grounds, I guess I would say that Merlot is farther from a big, oaky red than Cab Sauv is.

Thanks for info.
Just found out one of my LHBS has a WE Cab Sauv for $111.
but no skins!
tempting........very tempting!

Do they have any Amarone or the WE Montepluciano? Either of those would fit well in your Italian cellar. I wouldn't do the Cab without skins knowing how good the Eclipse Cab is with skins. It is considerably more expensive though. What you really need is a better LHBS. That's why I do all my kit shopping on line, my LHBS is pitiful.

I have 3 LHBS. 1 stocks nothing but WE, 1 Mosti Mondale and the last Rj Spags & WE.

I have found that 1 LHBS is better prices than the other 2.
I have 2 issues with shopping online
1) shipping kills me and I end up with a price not far off of what I can buy at the LBHs
2) at a LHBS I can pay cash and keep my wine purchase off the books so SWMBO doesn't know how much I really spend & make. So Shhhhhhhh!

But I will continue to keep my eye out for either of your suggestions

'Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive'? :D

If you're intending to venture away at least once than why not go for a white or blush wine? I know WE and RJS do a decent job of listing the characteristics of each of their wine kits, perhaps that would help you decide.
