I've read about niagra grape wine in many posts and I know that I love
this wine in the commercial variaty. Is this just Welches white grape
juice or does it say niagra on the can????

Welch's calls it's Niagara juice White Grape Juice. Their site has limited information on it, but it is made from Niagara grapes. As Masta has noted elsewhere on the forum, it does have some K-Meta in it as a preservative and to maintain its color without browning- so you should test for it.

I have made some of this before and it is pretty good, but definetly take the SG at the beginning. The first batch I made, by following directions it came out at 1.140 and would probably have never fermented close to dry.

paubin,

I've made a gallon of the welches white before and it is 100% Niagra grapes. It fermented just fine and is bulk aging now, but I've taken a few samples along the way and I like it. As Appleman said, I would use a hydrameter on ever wine to get the correct starting SG. Recipes are good starting points for sugar, but they are rarely exact.

I was definetly planning on using a hydrometer. I dont have a recipe on
hand, but was planning on making my own. Something in the neighborhood
of 4 lt juice. 8 oz of golden raisins, sugar to bring starting sg up to
1.095 (A little hot so using water to top up isn't an issue), all the
usual chems, maybe a small touch of tannin. Havent worked the recipe
out completely yet as Im out of carboys. Thanks for ensuring me that
white was indeed niagra.

Are you planning on using any oak? I didn't on the gallon that I made, but plan touse oak on my next batch and do 3 or 6 gallons in the Chard style.

I'm not sure yet. I have about 20 bottles of chard from my last kit and
was thinking I wanted to retain as much of the brightness of the niagra
grape as possible with the niagra.

Thanks, I see from the posting that the big winners are the simplest wines....interesting

Isn't that the case most of the time. The simplist things in life are the best. It's when we put our fat fingers into the mix that things tend to fall apart

I made a Niagara that was great. I did notice that there were Welches White grape juice and Welches Niagara labeled as such on the frozen concentrate cans. I specifically bought the Niagara not knowing for sure what grapes are in the white. I recently bought a Welches White/Raspberry that Im going to try. Check the store and let me know if you see the White and Niagara as separate labels.

p.s. I checked the label on the White/Raspberry, it said white grape, apple and raspberry juice so check what it says on the Welches White Grape juice. So Im not sure that White means "Niagara".Edited by: rgecaprock

I just started a Welches Write Niagara wine, the cans said Niagara
grapes on the can, I used 18 cans of frozen concentrate for 23 ltrs. it
gave me a 10ABV SG, I added no sugar, 18 cans was all they had at the
store, but 10%ABV is good for me. I used the Jack Keller Recipe.

All the cans in the stores around here just say white. That is why I
was a little confused. I wasn't sure if there was a difference. Now I
am definetly unsure. I think tomorrow morning before work I'll go to
the Welches site and check it out and see if they have a contact # or
e-mail.

Thanks all,

Pete

Dang Stinkie, at only 10 ABV you must be planning on drinking it up pretty quick

and no worrying about long term aging.

OK. That settles that. From everything I read on Welch's site white and niagra are the same thing.
