I'm interested in getting a red wine kit and a lot of them come with oak chips.
Are these chips generally plain or toasted/charred?
Is it acceptable to toast them at home with an oven or similar device? Or does this produce undesirable results?

It really depends on the kit. Mosti Mondiale kits, in my experience, always come with heavy toast oak. Others come with medium or untoasted oak. It really depends on the style of wine and the oaking that is appropriate for that style. The descriptions given by the vendors are good but sometimes the manufacturer's website gives a bit more info. Also, search this forum. Many members give info as to the makeup of the kit they are making.

Do you have a preference of oak? If so, you can always leave out the supplied oak and replace it with your own preference. Just be conservative - you can always add more but you can't take it out. Keep us informed as to what you decide.
