I know it's early, but thinking about doing a barrel of Petite Syrah next year. Will it stand on its own? If you had to pick something to blend with it, what varietal would it be and why?

I make Petit Sarah just about every other year and have never failed to medal in competition with it.

It is a classic all on it's own and (IMHO if you are making from fresh grapes) is perhaps the best red grape for home winemakers.

I highly recommend that you do not blend it. If you find that the results do in fact need blending, then you could always blend after the fact.

Thanks John, I have access to some excellent PS grapes. I have a few 30 gallon barrels, so my thought was also doing a companion varietal, if there is one that complements the PS.

It is an excellent wine on its own. And if you have access to really good grapes, I'd say leave it. But blending with a bit of Zin might be interesting.

Ive got 5 gallons of petite syrah going right now. I like it as it is and as a blend. Ive also got 5 gallons of cab going for blending, just in case...

Probably one of my favorites. I would definately keep it on its own unless it doesn't turn out as you expected or maybe not to your taste. :h

any wine that is full bodied would blent well. i have mixed in a small amount of merlot (10%) a couple of times with great results, but just 100% petit sarah is what i prefer.

I just got to thinking (yes, that's what that burning smell was). Shiraz is blended with Viognier sometimes. I wonder what a PS-Viognier might be like.
