I accidently bought some PH strips last night.
In my rushed state I thought they were SO2 strips. (I want to check my SO2 levels, but can not afford a device)

I did not realize my mistake until I got home.

Now the question is, do I need them, or should I return them?

I make mostly kit wines (with exception of SP/DB), so do I need PH Strips?

or should I return them toward the cost of some corks?

I'd hang on to them just in case I needed them in the future. Can't remember exactly but I think they were pretty cheap. I've used them even with my kit wines just to check the pH and document it. That way if I have issues with a similar kit or would like to try to copy the kit, I have some info to use.

Well, what kind of test strips are these? The only type of PH test strip that would be of SOME value to a winemaker are the "narrow range" test strips. If not, then return them. I know of no test strip for SO2 testing. By the way tho, if you are trying to test for SO2, then you need to know the PH of the wine so you know how much free SO2 the wine needs. However, you may just be sulphiting to a 50PPM range because you DON'T know the PH of the wine. I suppose this is acceptable if you have no way of testing the SO2.

There is a titration kits for SO2 testing that is inexpensive, but the error range is 20 PPM--that seems kind of high to me.

I bought some of those, at one time, too Elmer. Used them once on an orange juice wine and wasn't real impressed as they are SO vague. I would say to return them and get something you can use, since you say you are making predominantly kits and DB/SP.

.

they are stips of paper with a small pad at the end.
The results come out colored and you match that to the chart, which is numbered 1 to 10.

guess return I will!

Thanks for advice!

Those sound like wide-range papers. Not much use to you--send them back.
