FYI... I noticed this morning that RJS has updated its kit instructions, at least for the Cellar Classic Winery Series, from 2006RJS to 2007RJS. This had to have been done sometime over the past week or so when I last happened to look.

The major difference in the instructions is that the 2007 RJS has you going to a carboy for "secondary" as opposed to staying in the primary bucket until dry. The RJS Washington Merlot that a bought about a 40 days ago had the newer instructions but when I looked online the older 2006RJS instructions were extant.

They have to guaranty that if you follow the instructions to a tee, the kit will turn out OK. That said, for newer wine makers, going to a carboy for secondary is a little safer. You can certainly do it either way, if you know what you are doing and why.

When in doubt, follow the most up-to-date instructions.

I believe that all of the 2006 instructions sets call for fermenting to dry in the primary (ie 14-day primary). In 2007, they changed all brands that have grape packs for the reds (EP, CCWS, GCI) to the 7-day primary, leaving the other brands with a 14-day primary.
