I hope my vines were hardened off enough before the extreme cold hit. We should get a little snow today but it might be too late. The ground was bare and some of the vines were pretty green when it dropped to 10 degrees!!

I took a bunch of cuttings for rooting a day before so if all goes well, I'll at least have new plants to replace any lost.

How's your area??

Grapes have been around for centuries and I'm pretty sure that it got cold once or twice during that time. Some will make it...some won't, nature works that way.

Typically I would not fear some unseasonable cold. But my vines just took a bad hit last year. I had to cut one variety off at the ground and train them back up. That cost me at least 2 years of production. Another hard winter like this is shaping up to be....I'd rather not think about it. :(

It's snowing now and with a couple inches on the ground. That should help in the next few days when it drops back down around 10. I'm hoping it doesn't stay this cold very long or at least we get a good snow blanket.

On the good side, I got most of my outside work done before it hit. Did loose quite a few apples, just less cider.

We all know winter is coming. So get prepared ahead of time, cover with mulch if the vines are young. Snow actually helps to cover it. The cold wind is the worst.

My wine making buddy may have lost a bunch of new plants. His old vines were hardened off but his new planting was dead green and growing, first year in the ground. The 10 degree stuff hit with no good frost ahead of it to stop the growth on his new plants. His old ones were higher up and had turned yellow and were dropping leaves but not his new ones.

Some top growth died, but the roots should be still good. Mulch the vines if you know the cold is coming....
