I want to buy a viognier kit from Fine Vine Wines but I cant decide the best one. I know viognier is traditionally drunk young and that is what I am looking for in this batch. If you search http://www.finevinewines.com/searchadv.aspx?searchterm=Viognier+&ShowPics=1

you will see a whole bunch of them. I would love to get opinions. I am also going to get a double batch of the megloni barolo with grape skins.

Well, the Cru Select Shiraz Viognier is a red wine with under 10% Viognier added. And the Banana Pineapple Viognier is a flavoured Mist wine, not really a Viognier. Some others are blends.

Leaving more straight viogniers than I expected. BTW, the Ken Ridge Classic Viognier is not listed but it did darn good at the latest Winemaker Mag competition.

Maybe you should list the products you are considering in the thread, instead of a link to a mess of products. I hate flipping back and forth between a poor list and a discussion thread.

I'm making aFrench Viognierfrom Cru Select but it's not far enough along that I could give you an opinion. I was interested in this post because I might like to try another one. I'd like to see some actual recommendations as well.

No one knows those kits better than George, so give him a call at Finevinewines. He'll ask you a few questions, then zero in on what you like best. I have called him on numerous occasions about what to buy.

My advice is to buy the best kit you can get.

By the way, last spring I made the pineapple/banana viognier kit. Many of my friends and I drank it over ice, with some added blueberries, strawberries, and pineapple slices. It's not a true viognier, but as a summer wine (wine cooler), it was really nice.

It didn't last but a couple of months! 30 bottles!!!

I made the Cellar Craft Showcase Viognier last year. I just opened a full bottle a few weeks ago and it is tasting fantastic. By this Summer its going to be killer. This kit took a full 12 months to develop IMHO but it was very well worth the wait.

I've made the RJS Cru Select French Viognier, and at 9 months, it was really complex. At 12 months it was divine. I've gotten a lot of compliments on that one. I just wish I could source local Viognier grapes around here.

I have to say it was that RJS kit that caught our attention and is really the front runner at this point. At this pont if someone on this forum had reason to thing that the MM kit would be even better then I could likely be convinced. There is also a CC show case kit YakimaValley that might be good. I have never done a CC kit butthe people who make them seem to be high on them. My understanding is that this wine almost went extinct after world war I after being a staple for thousands of years. I also have read that this was resurected in France and the best wine comes from vines that are at least 30 years old. These two tidbits really cause me to focus on finding some good French juice for this wine.

do you really think this juice comes from france,or is the kit made in the french viognier style,???????????????????????????

Unless specified, it would be french style, not from France. Most likely California.

If you're asking about the Cru Select French Viognier, the juice/concentrate should mostly be coming from France, as it does not appear to say French-style. You could call the RJS 800 number (or email) and ask them.

Steve

Or give George a call and ask him what the "Country of Origin" is for the juice that is listed on the box.

That's surprising, I didn't think any grapes or juice for wine were exported from France. That's good to know.

I don't know about that, but there have been a couple of Limited Edition French kits from different manufacturers.

When I was a retailer, RJS (and the the others) said that the juices were sourced from the country mentioned. When I started with RJS, there were two Cru Select lines. The Cru Select Gold, which has been discontinued, which did not have country-of-origin naming, and the Cru Select Platinum which did have the country-of-origin names. This was before En Primeur and Cellar Classic Winery Series. The sales folk at RJS were pushing Cru Select Platinum as their best kits and proud of the sourcing.

I checked the RJS website and it lists France for the French Viognier, Australia for the Australian Viognier, and USA for the Californian.

ONLY GEOGE KNOWS FOR SURE/////BUT IF THE JUICE WERE THE CASE AND KNOWING AS I READ THE FRENCH WINE INDUSTRY IS IN BAD SHAPE FINACIALY I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD JUMP ON THE CHANCE,HOWEVER IF YOU TAKE THE ITALIAN FRESH JUICE IT DOES COME FROM CONTRY OF ORIGIN I'VE TRACED THEM,AND FRESH JUICE DOESN'T HAVE THE INTENSEITY OF A CONCENTRATE NOR DO I THINK THEY WOULD USE THEM IN THEIR WINES,BUT HAY WHAT DO I KNOW ,NEVER THE LESS A GOOD QUESTION TO SEE IF WE CAN GET A GOOD ANSWER FOR IF ONLY FOR KNOWLEDGE................

Well, I should think RJ Spagnols might also know. But it doesn't matter now. Last nightI got proof positive. I was talkingto mywine and it spoke back to me in French. Not being well versed, I could not pinpoint the actual region, but France it was.

mais oui! Le langage du vin est à la fois délicieux et perspicace.
