newbie to wine making. bought a orchard breezin pinot grigio from the lhb to discover that date on the kit is 20090521. He said they are good for 2 years. I am new to kits and want your advise on to make it or return it. Any help would be great

Made in May 2009. IMO, quite a bit old for a white. Sorry but I don't have any real experience with a mist kit this old. But if I didn't get a pretty good discount, I probably would not buy it. I don't like to make a white that is much over a year old.

I assume that this is the Kiwi Melon PG. I just want to point out that this is NOT a Pinot Grigio kit. It is a low alcohol, sweet, fruit flavoured kit made on a Pinot Grigio base. There's a large difference between this and a proper PG.

Ive always though they were good for 18 months. That being said they are almost always still just fine. Ive seen much older that were still fine but if buying from a LHBS Id ask them to chop the price down or no deal. This is probably a small dealer with very little turn around and although I like to support the the small guy I dont want to buy kits and chems that are either expired or pushing it so lots of times I buy stuff through bigger supply stores like those in our banners above who turn stuff around so fast that the stuff doesnt gather dust on them.

I spoke to RJ Spagnols a few weeks ago on a kit and they told me 2 years on a grand crew international kit.

The info I received from Lisa at Spagnols ( when she was still there) was, if I recall correctly, that the Cru Select kits (16l) and larger were good for about 12 months and the Grand Cru (10l) for 18 months. I can't recall for GCI but I wouldn't want one that was 2 years old unless it was a bargain. The smaller the kit the longer they last ( more concentrate). This OB would likely be ok, but it should be discounted.
