To bulk aging carboy. there was a bit of surplus because the only empty carboy i had was a 5 gallon one. The extra 1/2 US gallon is in the refer.

I decided to test my vinometer . The totally dry wine from the kit was cold at the time.
I actually couldnt see any indication in the capilary.
I tried a number of times with another person helping and we have learned nothing.
Well one thing perhaps.
In spite of my 100% Italian ancestory and tradition, I dont really enjoy totally dry wine.
I used the 1 percent formula(( on a batch of something or other that i made a while back)) that i read about somewhere and actually found it to be a bit too sweet.
I will do a 1/2% by volume test on some of this sangeovese after about 3 months of aging.

BTW-- ANY ADVICE ON THE VINOMETER.

I have read that it is an in accurate way of getting a % of alcohol reading but its a TOY and i like to play.

I also have trouble with the VINOMETER...guess my eyes aren't good enough or my VINOMETER is a dud...

A neighbor came over and tested a red wine and he got it to show up on the barrel....duh!!!!What was I doing wrong????
Seems he did something different than I was doing...like when he poured the wine into it...and I can't remember what it was...should have him back...or maybe someone on the Forum will help us out...

I just read that the wine needs to be at room temp (20 degrees C) and it's only accurate on dry wines. Hope this helps at bit.

mine was DEFINITELY DRY BUT cold--ill try again later. ill take out about 5 ounces so ill be able to taste test it while i'm doing the vinometer thing.

THANKS MUCH

Hehe Don't you love an excuse to taste test?

In an effort to organize all the wine stuff I have, I somehow managed to screw up printing most of the labels on a sheet of 30!

Hey Joan. Lets start a thread so all can post reasons to taste and test our wine.
Naturally no lying is permitted

SCOTTYMy best advise on the vINOMETER is to get rid of it. I haven't found anyone who can get this thing to work. I couldn't wait to get rid of mine. For a reading try EX. SG 1080 subtract final SG 990 (do not use decimal point, then divide by 7.36. you will get you % of alcohol

My lady friend asked where the magnifying glass is kept. She saw a reading and i didnt. The riot continued till we gave up.
