Looking good there bmorosco. Just back sweetened my blueberry melomel and my strawberry kiwi and will be bottling next weekend.

A weekend made for winemaking. It is raining hard on and off so I'm
stuck inside. Wanted to clean out the gutters but at least I'm getting
something done. Just about to throw some white oak in the oven to toast
for my welches niagara.

The recipes for all wines are pretty easy as long as you have all the
ingredients. You'll need acid blend and an acid tester, yeast nutrient
and energizer, a packet of yeast, pectic enzyme either powdered or
liquid, and sugar, and last but not least Welche's Niagara frozen
concentrate.

bmorosco....That wine is just brilliantly clear....awesome...love seeing wines so clear like that...Bravo!!!!

Just followed the kit directions .. It came with isgliass..Ithink thats how it is spelled that really works well But I left it at a constant temp of 65 degrees and time also was a factor . I will always filter my wines from now on ... I can't believe the diffrence If you hold it to the light you can not see any paticles at all it is crystal clear..Got very lucky with this batch..

I picked up a gravity filter a few months ago and have filtered 3 times now. This afternoon, I filtered my pinot gregio and my raspberry. I try to filter a couple of batches to conserve the pads. I did the pinot first and the raspberry last and I could tell a big difference in the pinot. It shines like new money! The dark wines are hard to tell a difference till they are in the glass.

Do any of you think that the filtering strips any flavors from your wines? I have heard and read that it does but would like to know for sure.

Waldo,

I can't tell a difference, but I don't have that refined of taste buds

. The raspberry has such a strong flavor, its hard to notice a difference. I didn't taste the pinot after, but no colorchange was noticeable.

The gravity filters sit on the top of the carboy and the wine is allowed to splash a lot. I would prefer having the wine go into the carboy a little more gentle, but I've not figured out how to do that yet.

Waldo, I normally filter all of my kits. I did do an experiment a while back with a kit I had split up at racking between 2 three gallon carboys. It was the Wine Expert Limited Edition Petite Syrah / Zinfandel from last year. I filtered one carboy but not the other. I also made a couple White Zinfandel kits last year. One I filtered, One I didn't.

I have been unable to tell any difference in taste. We have routinely had a bottle of filtered and unfiltered open at the same time. The filtered wines are so much cleaner looking as well. I have a Mini-Jet and use the Number 2 filters.

I wouldn't worry about stripping flavor too much. I can't remember but Tim V talked about this last year at Winestock and said you would have to use a much finer filter pad than is available to strip the flavor molecules out of the wine. I am one that feels filtering you wine is one of the best things you can do for it.

I was given advice when I bought my gravity filter to trim the wings on the outlet back enough to get tubing over( it will require larger diameter) then attach the tubing in a length with curve and that will solve the potential splashing and aerating that we don't want. It just takes a few minutes of surgery and you will need to procure tubing that will fit over the outlet.
