I remember his playing days well. I was at a game in Pittsburgh between the Pirates and the Phillies in the 1950's. The game was tied at 4 in the bottom of the ninth. The Pirates had men on 1st and 3rd with two outs and the batter lined the ball into centerfield for what appeared to be a winning hit. Gene Freese, the Pirate on 1st failed to touch 2nd base. Ashburn noted this and ran in with the ball, stepped on 2nd for a force out, negating the run. After much umpire discussion and fan displeasure, the game went into extra innings and the Phillies won in the 10th 8-4. Heads up play by Ashburn, not so much by Freese.

Just for the fun of it, I tried to find some information on the game cited above. I was wrong on the inning. The Phillies scored 4 runs in the 11th, not the 10th inning. The game was three days before my 13th birthday! I was one of the 3,082 who paid to watch it. I was in the right field grandstand, so I ponied up $1.50 of my hard earned paper route money.
