Neighbors pond finally rose to the overflow pipe in late December. The overflow goes into Plum Creek which eventually feeds into the Rocky River. Flow in the river spiked to 10x the average of the last 6 months once the pond was full. Every additional precipitation no longer goes to filling area ponds, but overflows directly to the river, making for extremely high flows. And also makes fishing the river nearly impossible.

You guys make me laugh worrying about how much snow you get. Over here in the UK, we really worry about snow. Any amount above 1 inch and there's absolute chaos, almost a national disaster. Roads, rail, and airports brought to a standstill.
We Brits do what we always do when it happens.
Blame the Government!

20 years ago, November and December were the mud months here. Almost all it did was rained in those months. That has gradually been becoming drier and direr. My water table-fed, gravel bottom farm ponds are dug at the headwaters of Campers Branch Creek, which flows to Campers Creek, with flows to the Elk River, which flows to the Tennessee River, which flows to the Mississippi River. But Campers Branch Creek has been dry for a year now.

Went on our wintertime jaunt to see the sandhill cranes at Wheeler Wildlife Refuge in Alabama today. Saw lots of them, plus one of 12 whooping cranes they said they counted today, and three snow geese. Plus getting MOONED by a duck! 😄 Then stopped off at The Brick in Decatur for a bite to eat, and swung by Cross-Eyed Owl Brewing Co. to pop in and say howdy to proprietor and brewmaster Keith Yager. Fun day!

The weather map for Alabama on Tuesday got drunk and flopped on its head!
😄
THREE inches of snow in Mobile and along the Gulf, where the white sands attract tourists? Not unheard of, but it very rarely ever happens. Meanwhile, the northern state gets off without any.

COOL!! (or Cold) SNOW DAY!!!

We actually had an all day "retreat" for the leadership committee for our church yesterday, and we cancelled the services today since it was supposed to be pretty slick about the time we normally get done with the service. So I got to finally plan out an overnight sourdough loaf, which I just cooked up, kitchen smells heavenly!

Fortunately for the committee, looks like we made the right choice. Not much snow yet but after all the cold weather we've had, most surfaces (aka driveway and road) are pretty slick. Can't wait for the single digit temps coming our way, lol.

Made up some cheesesteaks for lunch to hopefully propel the Eagles to a win today....Go Birds!

Last week was my wife’s birthday and she decided that she wanted to visit Hearst Castle while the weather was good and the tourists absent (an excellent combination in our minds).

For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, William Randolph Hearst spent 28 years and hundred of Millions of dollars building a 90,000 square foot home on 300,000 acres of land. It’s now a state park and a historical monument.

For those of you in the snow, I thought you might enjoy a dip in either of the two pools….

First the outdoor pool:

And now the indoor pool - gold color is 14k gold tiles

We have been there 3 times over the years. Have taken the Grand Rooms Tour twice and the Cottages and Kitchen Tour. Need to go back and do the tours we have not been on. Definitely well worth the price of admission.

We did Cottages and Kitchens this time. Definitely well worth the $35 admissions fee - it was a peek at a time and way of life that has disappeared. I should point out that this tour includes the wine cellar with hundreds of bottles remaining from the Hearst collection. I’m sure all are spoiled now but Chateau Margaux, Ch. Lafite, and Inglenook, were all included by the dozens.
