Copper (almost two) and Coco (8 months) decided to go on an adventure yesterday. At 3:30pm they went missing. After an hour we were getting pretty panicky and my wife posted a missing dog alert to FB. There was one sighting of them, still traveling together, about 1.8 miles from our place at 5:00pm but by the time we got it they were gone. At about 8:00 pm Copper, the larger one, showed up at home WITHOUT HIS LITTLE SISTER!!!

We had at least 5 vehicles involved in the search for hours… slow driving the rural roads and scanning fields with headlights. I personally was out until after 1:00 am. Anyways, it was single digits and windy last night. My wife was worried she would freeze to death but I convinced her that she would not freeze. I kept to myself the fear that she would run into a pack of coyotes, ensuring a much more violent outcome.

Anyways, this morning as I was getting my boots on to head out for a daylight search she appeared at the front door! 🥹🥹🥹

my son ordered tracking collars for them this morning. They are not leaving my sight until I get them.

ETA. The photo was taken 1/2 hour after she found her way home… very tired pups.

It's always scary when your pet wanders off, but even worse when it's winter. We had one disappear years ago in the winter, just before a huge snowstorm. Miraculously my wife spotted her crossing the dirt road we lived on while driving home one day almost 2 weeks after she vanished. She had lost 1/3 of her weight and was in a zombie state, but otherwise checked out fine at the vets. Took her a few days, but she recovered.

Tough night for you and so glad to hear a good outcome. No surprise they are tired. Keep the collars charged (somehow, the dogs seem to know when they are not) and they will help on the (hopefully rare) occasions that these guys feel the needs to explore the world.

And know you are not alone - many very caring owners have these experiences. Including myself (yes, mine wears a GPS collar now - it was embarrassing when the vet's dog was exploring the world 2 miles from home).

So glad you found them unharmed. And glad you are putting GPS collars on. We have had Whistle GPS collars on our Golden Retrievers for years. They are well worth the piece of mind you get knowing if they were to get out you can find them easily.
