I've been away a long time. Wondering what people think is the best kit out there.. Any response is greatly appreciated.

The Finer Wine Kits are popular. I was in the beta program for the Ultima line, making a Zinfandel. It came out great, although the price of the Ultima line is stiff.
Their Tavola line generally makes a decent red, and the Forte line is significantly better.

My brother-in-law really likes the WineXpert Old Vine Zinfandel. He has made it 3 times and says it is his favorite.

Both FWK and WE are good choices.
Note that FWK are not shelf stable -- they ship cold and must be either refrigerated, frozen, and the kit must be started. This is due to how the concentrate is made.

Keep us updated on your progress. I've looked at the WE kit myself.
What kind of failures?
The first was a Sauvignon Blanc which came with a dark color. It was one of the first they sold. They offered a refund but didn't take it since they stated it shouldn't affect the taste.
The second was a Zin I had in the carboy for over two years. I used a head saver and left it on too long.
Mostly operator error. Just getting back into it.
