I had a '73 Pinto for 5 months in 1973 during the "gas crisis" (or what we now refer to as the "good old days" when gas went all the way up to $.89 per gallon!). Worst car I ever owned by far! We lived in a little valley near Pittsburgh and the car could barely make it up the hill out of the valley. My daughter used to wait for the school bus and when I drove by, I could hear kids saying, "There's your Dad, Debbie." and she was so embarrassed she would not even look at me. In trying to enter a major highway, I took my life in my hands trying to accelerate to 55 mph. I had traded my '67 Camaro for the car and I complained so much, my bride said, "If you hate it so much, why don't you get rid of it?!"
You traded a Camaro for a Pinto???? Were you sober when you did that?I had a '73 Pinto for 5 months in 1973 during the "gas crisis" (or what we now refer to as the "good old days" when gas went all the way up to $.89 per gallon!). Did not have to ask me twice. I went out and got a '74 Trans AM that weekend! I was back in the saddle again! Looked just like this one:

Brian, I have to laugh at myself when I think about that! In my defense, I remember that I went into the Ford dealership to look at the Mustang and there was a big promotion featuring the Pinto. At the time, gas was "expensive" and scarce. We could only get gas on alternating days when it was available. Long lines at the stations, etc. I guess somewhere in the dark confines of my mind, I thought perhaps a more economical car would be a good choice inasmuch as my bride had a '72 Cutlass for our "family car." I remember my salesperson mocking me to another, saying "He came in here for a Mustang!" and laughing. You traded a Camaro for a Pinto???? Were you sober when you did that?
We did a lot of crazy things during the gas shortage crisis. My dad bought a tiny Fiat because Consumer Report listed it as "best gas mileage." It was broken down constantly and the nearest repair shop was far away. Once, we loaded it into the back of a cattle trailer to get it to the shop. Drugs and/or alcohol could have been involved.
My dad bought an Opel. At a time when a 1971 Pontiac Catalina got 8-12 MPG, the Opel got 33 MPG.We did a lot of crazy things during the gas shortage crisis.
